Gorilla trekking in Rwanda and Uganda is considered very safe. Both countries have well-established park security, experienced rangers who accompany every group, and strict protocols. Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park and Uganda's Bwindi are among the most visited and well-managed parks in Africa. Millions of visitors have trekked without incident. Standard travel precautions apply, but there is no meaningful security concern in these specific destinations.

When is the best time to go gorilla trekking?

Gorilla trekking is available year-round — gorillas are always present. That said, each season has its appeal:

Dry seasons (Jun–Sep & Dec–Feb): Easier hiking on drier trails, better photography conditions, and generally more comfortable weather.

Wet seasons (Mar–May & Oct–Nov): Fewer tourists mean a more intimate experience, and the forest is lush, green, and especially beautiful.

Can children go gorilla trekking?

The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years in both Rwanda and Uganda. This applies to Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Bwindi Impenetrable NP in Uganda. In some cases, exceptions may be made in Uganda for younger children — we recommend contacting us directly to discuss your family's situation and we'll advise on the best options.

How fit do you need to be for gorilla trekking?

You don't need to be an athlete, but a reasonable level of fitness helps. Treks can range from 1 to 8 hours depending on where the gorilla family is located that day. The terrain can be steep, muddy, and dense — especially in Bwindi. Porters are available at all parks to carry your bag and provide physical support, and we strongly recommend hiring one. If you have mobility concerns, let us know and we'll plan accordingly.

What is a gorilla permit?

A gorilla permit is an official authorization issued by the national park authority that grants you access to visit a specific habituated gorilla family for one hour. Permits are strictly limited — only 8 visitors are allowed per gorilla family per day — to minimize human impact on the gorillas. The permit fee directly funds conservation and local community programmes. Permits cost $1,500 in Rwanda and $800 in Uganda.

How do I get a gorilla permit?

Permits can be booked directly through the official park authorities (Rwanda Development Board or Uganda Wildlife Authority), or through a licensed tour operator like GorillaWise. What are the gorilla trekking rules & regulations?

Rules exist to protect the gorillas and ensure a safe, respectful encounter:

· Maximum 1 hour with the gorillas per visit
· Minimum distance of 7 metres at all times
· No flash photography
· No eating or drinking in the gorillas' presence
· Keep your voice low and movements calm
· Do not visit if you are sick — human diseases can transfer to gorillas
· Follow ranger instructions at all times
· Maximum 8 visitors per gorilla family per day
