Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake in the Great Rift Valley, about 90 kilometers northwest of Nairobi at an elevation of roughly 1,884 meters. It covers an area that shifts between about 100 and 150 square kilometers depending on rainfall, fringed by yellow fever trees and floating papyrus beds. The lake sits outside any formal national park boundaries but is protected as a Ramsar wetland and draws an enormous diversity of waterbirds, large populations of hippos along the shore, and good numbers of land mammals on the surrounding Crescent Island Game Sanctuary. The lake is a popular first or last night on a Kenya safari — close enough to Nairobi to be practical, varied enough in activity to feel worthwhile in its own right.

One of the few parks in Kenya where visitors can walk or cycle without a guide, Hell's Gate features towering red volcanic cliffs, the Central Tower and Fischer's Tower rock formations, geothermal activity, a deep gorge with natural hot springs, and free-roaming wildlife along the track. It's about 30 minutes south of the lake.

Year round. February and March and July to September offer the clearest weather and best bird diversity. The lake is accessible and attractive in all seasons.
